About Ryan

I first became a caregiver during college as a job with flexible hours at a hospital in my community. I worked there as a patient companion for 3 years where my duties included giving care to all types of mentally and physically challenged individuals. Other jobs I have had as a caregiver EX. I was sole caregiver to an elderly retired professor who needed help with pretty much everything physically, and suffered from dementia as well. I lived in with him 4 days a week 24 hours a day for 6 months so that his wife could continue teaching at the University and traveling. I recently moved to Portland Oregon and have a job that is less emotionally rewarding than I would like it to be. I love being a caregiver because I am excellent at it. Every patient I've ever had (no matter how difficult) has always grown to love me and consider me a part of the family. I am a well educated (two bachelors degrees) and genuinely patient and understanding person. I would love to be able to find a family in need of my skills so that I can begin working again at a job I am passionate about. I have two bachelors degrees in english literature and philosophy so I love to read in my down time. I am 26 years old, and have a 3 month old son named mason who is my whole world. I am just getting settled into portland and would love to have a job as a caregiver again in the near future.

I was a caregiver for her husband who was a retired professor at the University of California, Irvine. I lived in their home with him for 3-4 days a week every week for about 6 months. He suffer from dementia, physical weakness, and rapid mood swings from good to bad. He also had a very hard time with his memory. He was the most rewarding patient I ever cared for. I was solely responsible for every aspect of his care 24 hours a day 3-4 days a week. I cooked all his meals, made sure he was bathed, changed his sheets when he soiled them, I gave him all his pills every day, and entertained him in every way I could think of. He believed that I was just a friend that came over to spend time with him every week, and after a month of caring for him that was the truth.

It was my job to care for terminally ill and mentally unstable patients in the care of the hospital. Most were elderly and suffered from dementia and Alzheimer's. I would generally work 16 hour shifts where I would attend to all of the patients basic needs such as feeding, going to the bathroom, and safely transporting them to and from physical therapy and other appointments throughout the hospital. I was also responsible for making sure they took there medications and were safe during their stay. Some cases with terminally ill patients without family I was just there to make their days more enjoyable as they slowly passed away.
