My career as a caregiver came very early in life for me. I became a CNA at the age of 16 and my Grandmother was so happy she had a story to tell me. When I was about 3, my Grandmother had a Mastectomy. When she came home the first thing I said to her was "I'm your doctor now jammar, I'll take care of you". We went to her follow up appointment which I didn't remember until she told me. We went to the doctors and I was mesmerized by the doctor changing her dressing. She said he was telling me how to do it so she gets better. Later that evening, my Aunt who is only 14 years older than me was trying to help change the dressing. My Grandmother said she never hurt and laughed so hard because of my reaction to what my Aunt was doing I turned red and yelled at her because she doesn't know what she's doing, that's not how the doctor said to do it". So my Grandmother in tears from laughing and the pain it caused said "it's ok, show Auntie Kris how to do it". I went and washed my hands, I pulled the tape off gently, I opened the sterile gauze pads and soaked them in the bottled water we got from the doctors, I took the gauze pads out a few at a time and I cleaned and wiped the area. I dried it and then I had to put the "icky toothpaste" stuff. Every since this story, I have worked the last 30 years in healthcare. As a CNA I get to spend more time with my patients.
