When I came to the United States about ten years ago, I noticed there are lots of senior homes for the elderly. I was amused because where I come from(Sierra Leone, West Africa), we do not have such institutions. So that was initially what pulled me into becoming a caregiver. I then started by attending a caregiver school and became a GNA in 2011. I also went further to become a CMT(certified medicine technician), and now I'm in Montgomery Community College taking my prerequisites for Nursing to one day becoming a BSN. In the process of all this, I have come to love and enjoy what I do as a career. There are a lot of things that I enjoy so far being a caregiver, especially being dependable upon. When I look at the elderly here, I miss my grandparents back home the most; so whenever I get the opportunity to care for a senior, it brings a feeling of fulfillment in my life, that it challenges me to do my best in all I do for them. Through this I have learned and master that whatever it is that I do for the elderly, if I am not PRESENT, there is no way I'll be able to make an impact in that senior individual's life. So I make sure I am PRESENT mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically when I care for an elderly. I am also dependable, reliable, trustworthy, credible, and supportive, all which I considerto be my personality traits. My goal is to always make a positive impact in my elderly clients lives. I'm also a mother of three precious children ages Nine, Five, and One. Whenever I leave home for work, my Five year old endeavors to always ask me "Mommy are you going to take care of someone today?" I would then say "Yes Jemma, I am going to do just that!" I feel proud of myself because I know through my work, I'm teaching these little people I'm in care of, the real essence of CARING.
