Multiple sclerosis involves damage to the protective covering of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is typically a chronic and progressive disease, presenting with symptoms such as numbness, tingling, loss of muscle coordination or balance, severe fatigue, weakness, impaired speech and vision, and mood changes. No cure for multiple sclerosis exists, but flare-ups of symptoms called “attacks” can be prevented by taking proper medications, maintaining hygiene and hydration, and quitting smoking. Caregivers should promote relaxation and good sleep habits to ease the effects of MS. They can also provide emotional support, mobility services, and daily activity assistance.
