What attracted me to becoming a caregiver is that it's my calling and what I'm passionate about. It comes very naturally for me after being in this profession for over 30 years. I started my caregiving career at the age of 12 when I started volunteering at a local nursing home. At the age of 19, I took the 120-hour course and became a Certified Nursing Assistant. I am still listed on the Wisconsin Nurse Aid Registry under my maiden name; however, I have not followed up with continuing education, so I can only perform these duties in a non-federal facility or home. I have worked in nursing homes as well as worked in private home care. I have extensive experience in caring for people with dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. I have cared for younger adults who have special needs, but my main experience is in caring for the elderly. My philosophy is to treat the people under my care the same way I would want a loved one to be treated. I believe it is always possible to maintain dignity regardless of the help needed. I see people, not diagnoses. I am very intelligent and friendly and have an excellent sense of humor, which is so important in this kind of work! I am most interested in live-in home care for one family. I believe that continuity of care is extremely important for establishing trust. I find that it can be confusing and distressing for you or your loved one when there is a revolving door of caregivers. Also, I find that the loved ones of the person receiving care rest much easier when they have one point of contact. I would expect that there would be some respite hours on my behalf to avoid caregiver burnout; however, I would still be available if a respite worker couldn't come for his or her shift. In high school I took the program for CNA classes, to help others as I did for my grandmother before I lost her at the age of 15. I'm quiet, and I keep to myself, but I'm a caring person. I get my work done, and if I can I will work over my time if needed. I love most about being a CNA is that I can help other's when they can't help themselves, and knowing I can make a difference in their life. I have been working as a CNA for many years and have four children and as much as I love doing this I had made the decision to go back to school in the health field, so I can further my self in helping others. I want to be able to understand how they feel, what they love and what they dislike. Most of my job is hands on and that's what I love most, however there is other things that people need and that is for someone to talk to, and I don't think us CNA's get enough time to know our patients. That's why I'm going back to school.
