Over the years, we thought we were just doing what we needed to to survive. I worked my way up to be a casino executive while my daughter relearned the majority of her motor functions and had several major surgeries as we strove for her to be just a regular "kid". Unbeknownst to me, I was acquiring a wealth of knowledge and experience which would prove invaluable for myself and my clients in years to come. At four years old, my daughter was paralized from Guillaime Barre Syndrome. At that time, this Syndrome was so rare, especially in pediatric patients, that several doctors would stop by our hospital room just to have a look at this frail, tiny girl. Unfortunately, that also meant that doctor's didn't have alot of information about my daughters illness for me either. From that point forward, as any nurturing mother would do, I set out to learn as much as I could, and do whatever was within my power to facilitate the healing process for her. This journey brought me from St. Josephs' Childrens Hospital and the Barrow Neurological Institute to the Shriner's Childrens Hospital, and finally after a relocation to Las Vegas, to the private medical community in this city. During this time, I found that I had generally acquired more knowledge of the syndrome than a lot of the medical personnel we were encountering. Not only of this particular syndrome, but of insurance policy's, pre existing conditions, medications and the intricacies of the pharmaceutical industry, patient insurance billing, authorization and co pays, to mention just a small portion. This lifetime of education bestowed upon me has been an invaluable tool in my caregiving career. Thus in turn, it has also benefitted each client I have had over the past ten + years as a caregiver.
