I became a caregiver because when I went to nursing school the first clinical that we did was in a nursing home, and it was so easy for me to be around the residents there. I took care of both sets of Grandparents when I was younger, as they were ill early on, and I fit right in to the needs of that age group. I am also comfortable working with people in many settings. I understand the importance of small task help, as well as large task help, and tend to get along well with many people around me. It is hard for seniors to be at home, and get to do all the activities that they enjoy. I try to do activities that the seniors enjoy doing, or have done in the past, so that they will participate or enjoy. Trying to do physical activity like going outside or walking would be great, but if wheelchair bound, at least getting out to enjoy the sunshine. If someone loved to play cards in the past that would be something fun to do. Putting together flower arrangements, or crafts of some kind is also something fun that others have liked to do sometimes. I love crafts, puzzles, and just about anything new to learn. I know that it isn't easy for the person to have someone come into their home and also to lose some of their independence, so I try to make it as easy on the person as possible and show understanding.
