Gaining employment as a caregiver has provided me with experience working with patients and families who are caring for a loved one who is overcoming the challenges of chronic illness. As an experienced caregiver, I have also learned firsthand the toll that caregiver burnout can have on loved ones. That is why I strive to be dependable, respectful, and to eliminate as much stress as I can on both the patient and family that I am responsible for. What attracts me to being a caregiver is the ability to learn about the unique needs of my patients. As a future physician, I am eager to deliver healthcare to people from all walks of life. However, the quick nature of medicine can sometimes make it hard for providers and patients to connect and discuss underlying issues in one's life. As a caregiver, I am able to not only care for that individual, but learn their story, better appreciate their accomplishments, hobbies, and limitations, just like I would my own family member. Ultimately, being a caregiver has allowed me to build a longer working relationship, develop my bedside manners, and grow alongside my client. Earning admission to medical school has been one of my great accomplishments, and my current and future experiences with caregiving will only help me to better serve my community as a doctor.
