I accidentally became a caregiver, after doing massage therapy for 25 years. I love people and have a knack for tuning into them, making them laugh and seeing the bright side. I take things lightly and practice patience and being in the moment. I do Tai Chi which keeps me grounded, happy and in physical shape. I am easily adaptable in others' homes, as I housesit a lot, take care of peoples' pets and have been in and out of a lot of homes, caregiving and doing hospice work. Bob and I would spend 4 hours together 2/3 days a week. I would get him out walking and we would go to lunch. I would make sure he took his medication and generally 'be with him'. Some days I brought my guitar and we would sing together. Bob was 87 and not very happy, due to the fact he had been taken out of his home in Florida and put in a home in Portland. We had many laughs though and I was able to bring out his stories and make him happy by being close and interested in his stories. Wonderful man! He has now passed...

Originally hired to help with Mrs Visnick who has Alzheimer's. At the time, her husband was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. He came home to be in hospice and I became his caregiver during hospice and was with him when he passed. I had to change bile bags, help with bathing in bed, changing sheets, disbursing meds. At the same time I took care of household, paying bills, making sure Judi was happy (playing cards, feeding her good food and watching where she was going when she left the room!) When her husband passed, I became her caregiver who would stay overnight for a few days and nights in a row. I would take her out, run errands and we were buddies. I helped her choose what to wear and was the only person in the house with her, so I oversaw pretty much 'everything'. They had a housekeeper bi-monthly but I kept the house tidy and clean.

Dan Parker
Dan became a paraplegic during a rock climbing fall. I came into his home and helped with toileting, (inserting suppositories, etc) and preparing meals. We ran errands together and I took him to physiotherapy. I kept his house nice and generally 'hung out' with him, overseeing household needs. Overnight, I would come in and help him with toileting. Eventually, he became self sufficient and didn't need me anymore! To this day we are friends and I go to visit him.

My primary concern as a caregiver is to make sure that my client is able to function at the best of their ability and to make sure that they are having the highest quality of life that they are able to have. I am not only there for my client but I am also there for the family (such as: to let them go grocery shopping, are just to be another set of ears at doctor appointments or for the family. After a few days with the client and the family I begin to consider them family. I have a great amount of nurturing and empathy, some say I care to much but I give 150% to my clients and families. I have been a first responder, EMT, CPR Instructor, nurse's aide, and medication aide. My personal achievement that I am most proud of is having a D.N.S. that I work with for a long time trust me to teach new nurse's the medication routine and to be a charge nurse. As a personal care giver the highest praise I can be given is for my client to tell me I must be an angel and that they love me.
