About Teresa

I bring a genuine sense of compassion and openness to caregiving. My approach to caregiving is gentle, though I am able to define healthy boundaries when needed, and my sense of humor is generally in tact. I understand that receiving care from others can create a sense of vulnerability. I do my best to counter this dynamic so that people feel at ease in their own home. Keeping in mind that we're all at various stages of the aging is a wonderful tool for connection. Meeting people where they're at is always my goal. Caregiving allows me to connect with people in a genuine way; to do what I can to help people find comfort and peace of mind. Having been raised by my grandmother, I have been drawn to geriatric company and care since a young age. . Consequently, I often feel a natural connection to people within the elderly population. Most importantly, in our collective culture, we often tend to dismiss those within the aging community. Dismissing the dynamic, complex and accomplished people who live within these layers. If we overlook the autonomy and dignity of others, we as caregivers compromise the depth and value of our own experience. Aside from the deepening of character and connection that care-giving provides, the varied hours are often a complementary fit to my schedule.

Susan Ward
Provided in-home care for elderly woman with late stage Parkinson's disease and progressive cancer. I provided companionship, light house-keeping, and meal preparation, medication reminders. Weekly routine changed gradually, as client shifted from an independent state to requiring full assistance. Comfort measures became the primary focus; shifting client's position, wound care, hydration, pain management, etc.

I provided private, in-home care for a senior woman in her eighties. Assisted with activities of daily living; bathing; dressing, routine physical and lymphatic drainage therapies; medication administration; meal preparation for a specialized diet; laundry, light cleaning and organizing, and plant care. Client was semi-ambulatory, though due to fluxuating strength, often required transfer assistance, There was some variation in my schedule, as I worked both day and overnight shifts, depending. During day shifts I took my client to her various doctor and therapeutic appointments, and other such outings.

Volunteer visiting companion to hospice patients

Jun 2013 - Aug 2014
Signature Hospice
After completing the hospice, volunteer training course through Signature Hospice, I provided companion visits to patients at various nursing home facilities. Essentially, I sat with patients, sometimes holding their hands, talking, listening, singing. Sometimes I simply sat as a presence in their room, depending on each given situation.

Caregiver for residential client

Sep 2011 - Mar 2013
Private employer
Private care companion for woman on hospice. Due to diagnosis, client was not ambulatory, as right side paralysis had set in. I assisted with activities of daily living; bathing and wound care; medication administration (including injections, when needed), massage of extremities to reduce swelling and ease discomfort; detailed charting and up to date communication with other caregivers. I assisted with a wide range of transfers depending on the circumstance at hand; gait belt, pivot, Hoyer, and stair lift transfers. When client was resting, I took care to tidy things up, prepare meals, and keep the laundry clean. My client, and her family and friends were wonderful. We laughed a lot and often sat in quiet meditation, honoring my clients daily practice.

Caregiver for residential client

Aug 2011 - Mar 2012
Private employer
Provided in-home, end of life care for woman with late stage Alzheimers in her nineties. Assisted with activities of daily living, though client was often able to follow through with general activities. My primary role was to provide companionship. We talked, I read books aloud, we listened to records. On sunny days we sat in her garden. On occasion she would become restless and agitated. Much of my focus was on recognizing mood shifts and potential turmoil before there was evidence of escalation. I prepared meals, did my best to encourage her to eat, when appropriate, and did my best to recognize when it was time to allow her to go inward. An exercise in discernment. As always, I tended to light housework and laundry.
