I became a caregiver when I was 16yrs old. I've always, for as long as I can remember, wanted to be involved with healthcare & more specifically in home healthcare. My very first patient was non-verbal, had been in the fetal position for a couple yrs, had a feeding tube & bed-sores... It was heartbreaking... U could clearly tell that she had been neglected for yrs & was totally unresponsive... Her name was Barbie. I solely took over her care & for the next year spent countless hours trying to gain her trust. She, in the beginning, fought off everything. No one could get anything into her feeding tube without her pushing it back out. It took me a couple months but I gained her trust, & from that day on I was the only one she'd let anywhere near her without fighting. I would literally sing to her when I fed her through that feeding tube & she stopped pushing it back out. She started letting me work on stretching her arms & legs... She had been in that fetal position & rigid for yrs also. I got so close to her. I got a call about a yr & a half after I started caring for her & after 7 yrs of not saying anything... Didn't speak one word in those 7yrs. Her health was declining & I knew her time was near. She had taken a turn for the worse that night & when I got that call I knew it was her time. She knew also & after not uttering 1 word in all those years apparently she had 1 request that night & that's why I was called. They said she just kept saying my name. I rushed over there that night, crawled into that hospital bed with her & for 4hrs I held her hand & sang to her till she took her last breath. Although it was gut-wrenchingly painful I knew right then & there that's what I wanted to do!
