I became a care giver because I was an LPN and was injured on a job, and I still wanted to take care of people. My mother had Alzheimer's and I realized it was really hard finding dependable caregivers that really cared for patients. I give each patient my undivided attention and treat them like they are my mom or dad, and make them feel like they are the most important person in the world.

Empathy - Great caregivers are able to cultivate closer bonds by sharing in the happiness or the sadness of the senior they care for. Patient - Caregivers understand that slowing down is a process of aging. A great caregiver allows the elderly to move at their own pace and not make them feel rushed. Dependable & Honest - Caregivers work with a great deal of independence. A great caregiver must be counted on to be where he or she is required to be on time and prepared as well as to perform required duties in the absence of continuous supervision Compassionate - Great caregivers possess a powerful desire to help others, especially seniors. They are inviting and available even if all they do is listen and provide companionship.

I was told at the age of 12 I was going to be a caregiver. Caregiving for the elderly is my life's work. I truly enjoy it. My greatest accomplishment has been learning how to do an in and out cath(female) by the patient herself!!

I always wanted to be a caregiver. Taking care of people has always been a major thing in my life! My mother and grandmother took care of people since I was small. I grew up seeing new people. Seeing the smile on their face is priceless. Some have no family and I just want to be that caregiver where I want to treat them like their family. It doesn't matter about your race, color, none of that. I enjoy listening to their stories and I enjoy making them feel good and making them smile.

I became a caregiver completely by accident, but for sure not an accident. My neighbor, who I had yet to meet, asked me over to meet with her and her brother. Apparently, her brother had a crush on me and she needed someone to sit with him during the day. That was a 3 year friendship even after they moved out of state. From then until now, I've been a constant caregiver. I've cared for my own family members, my friend's family members and for strangers who became family members. I've worked in assisted living facilities, nursing homes and private in home care. Private in home care is my choice over anything, because I know that my person will have all the attention and care they need. The one thing I ask other caregivers who are just starting out in this line of work is, what kind of relationship do you have with your parents and/or grandparents? If there is no relationship with their own family, there is no way they can ever give the kind of care someone else's parents or grandparents need. I go into each person's home and give the kind of attention and care I would expect a caregiver to give my own family member. You have to have the right mentality to do this line of work and I know for certain I've got that!
