I also realized when I helped care for my grandmother who died of cancer while I was in college, that I have a very nurturing side. I am an aesthetician by trade and have had many elderly clients who would simply enjoy the conversation as well as the physical contact during the session. I love being someone who could brighten their day. I am a certified Patient Care Technician. I do have my own transportation (my car is insured) so running errands and shopping isn't an issue. It is also extremely important to have the ability to pay attention to small details. Have patience and a calm demeanor comes along way when dealing with the sick and the elderly. Also, compassion and empathy can't be taught as a nursing assistant. To have the ability to show compassion and put yourself in someone else's shoes and understand how they're feeling is a much-needed trait to have. I know I have all of these traits. I was raised by my grandparents and was taught to always have respect for others especially my elders. I have a great respect for the elderly and believe they are not always treated the way they deserve and I won't to change that. I love sitting and chatting with them and hearing all the stories they have to tell me, maybe even learning a thing or two from them. Sometimes all they want is just someone there to listen and spend time.
