I was 15 years old and just started my freshman year of high school when I was placed in a class called Intergenerational Studies. For 2 hours each day I was taken to the nursing home called Golden Years there in Elgin, Tx. I started off just getting residents from their rooms to come and do activities with me. But it wasn't long and I was working side by side with CNAs, RNs, and at one point the DON had me shadow her for 2 weeks. I just got really interested and a few years after graduation and having my son, I pursued a CNA certification and was assigned the hospice hall and the "lockdown unit" which was occupied by the more violent patients and those with conditions such as Alzheimer's and/or parkinson's, as well as those with behavioral health conditions. I honestly just fell in love with everything about caring for the elderly. Even the hard and very emotional side of the care I provide is something I wouldn't want to stop doing. I would love to get my CNA back but just haven't attempted to do so since my husband passed in 2011. Since my high school days I have worked with all ages of people, from a 2 year old little princess to a 98 year old gentleman I referred to as Fred Astaire due to them looking like twins. He loved it and would smile so big when I walked in every day; and every day he would say "Good morning Ms. Judy (Garland). You feel like dancing the day away?" It's things like that for which I love my work. Please feel free to ask anything, I would love to tell everything now but there is just so much I've been blessed to have experienced with so many different people I'd never be done.

I have a caring, nurturing nature, soft spoken and compassionate. I don't rush my clients and have a great relationship with them. I am requested to return regularly. Working in a cancer hospital my whole career, I am very good at taking care of and anticipating the needs of my clients, but also filling the void of loneliness that many of the elderly/ill clients experience. I was honored with Employee of the Year in 2019 at my previous employment.

I am careful, safe, organized and coordinated in transporting clients for their needs whether it is for picking up medications, getting them to and from their appointments, filling out forms, helping with their shopping, all personal care service for their daily living for and anytime they want some simple conversation and just not be alone. To give and share with clients, one must be compassionate and patient and have an understanding that those needing care would like for the caregiver to understand their needs. There happens to be an advantage to being a caregiver that can put themselves in the shoes and situation of those with the need. My joy is realized when the needs are filled and the cared for people are grateful and thankful. I want to give the care and experience the joy often. I have experienced this joy with my parents as I cared for them. Currently I am a part-time caregiver for various clients providing them all the assistance they may need. Professional and courteous, always on time. Administering medication and food through a gastric tube. Bathing and attending to other personal hygiene and grooming needs. Food preparation and feeding client, according to strict dietary requirements and procedures Cleaning and light housekeeping (client's laundry, dishwashing, cleaning spaces used by client and caregivers, cleaning therapy equipment) Assisting with therapies (cognitive, speech, occupational) and range-of-motion exercises, including manual transfers to and from bed to assist client with weight-bearing and balance exercises. General companionship and interaction with client (i.e. reading books, cognitive therapies). Driving client to and from appointments and activities in a client-provided wheelchair accessible van.

I've known I've wanted to work in healthcare since I was 14 years old. The summer of 7th grade my mom who was a caregiver too had one of her clients come spend a few weeks with us after she broke her hip. I was old enough to help then and in doing so I discovered my passion. I'm a certified Medical Assistant with 3 years experience and am currently enrolled in Devry University online working towards my associates degree in Health Information Technology.

I have over 7 years experience as a care giver and have worked in hospital, skilled nursing , memory care, rehabilitation and home care setting. I also have a valid CNA licence, and CPR certification. After taking care of my Dad as he battled stroke for 10 years, I decided to work in healthcare and assist in making impact to our elderly . Here are my traits that make me a great caregiver: Empathy and compassion. Working with people in a home care setting, it is essential that a caregiver feel the desire to want to help. By showing both empathy and compassion caregivers will let the person they are caring for know that they care about the person and want to do what they can to help them. Patience. When you work with someone who needs home care it is important that you are patient and understanding. It helps to sometimes put yourself in the other person's shoes and see what it might be like to ask people for help. Reliable. A great caregiver is someone that can be counted on to be there. If the caregiver says he or she is going to be there to provide home care every Thursday morning, then the caregiver shows up, unless there is an emergency. Those needing home care services need a reliable and dependable caregiver. Trustworthy. Most people who need home care services are in a vulnerable position. They are inviting someone into their home to be near their valuables. A good caregiver is someone who is trustworthy in this regard, as well as in being trusted to keep the client's information confidential. Flexible. As with most things in life, home care needs may change and unexpected events can happen. A good caregiver will be prepared to go with the flow, being flexible, so that they continue to provide good home care, even if a rigid schedule isn't being followed. I naturally have an urge to help others. I always place a priority on helping others. I want to make the world a better place and do it with one home care patient at a time. Being a good home caregiver is in my heart and knowing I'm helping a patient get better and feel comfortable. I have the qualifications thats needed for all my patients needs. Sincerely , Debra L.
