About Jennifer

I feel worthwhile and that I am making a difference. Before I started college I worked in daycare.I received a lot of joy helping the children to overcome obstacles. I graduated from the University of Texas and received my BSN. I worked at St. Lukes in the ICU's. I took care of clients with all kinds of problems.I also worked on the transplant unit at ST. Luke's. I transferred to M,D. Anderson Hospital where I was the evening charge nurse. Our clients had a variety of cancers. After 18 months I transferred to a private oncology office. I dealt with newly diagnosed patients.I taught them about their disease, I mixed and administered chemotherapy. The doctors I worked for were also hematologist. We treated a number of AIDS patients.I worked extensively with the families. When the patients disease was no longer treatable I Placed them on Hospice. My children were young and I decided to stay home with them. I eventually went back to school and became a Texas Certified teacher. I was certified to teach grades 4-8th and special education. I taught in public schools and started tutoring privately. I then started to take care of clients that needed my help physically.

I was responsible for having the patient ready to see the Doctors. We had to have their charts ready with all their reports. It was our job to teach each new patient about their disease and the chemotherapy they would be niversity of Texas School of Nursing. It was important that they understood. This was a very frightening time for them. Most of our patients had subclavian catheters. This was the safest way to give some of the drugs. They had treatments in the office ever 4 weeks unless their blood counts were low. We drew their blood weekly and scheduled all their test. The hardest part was when their test showed the cancer had returned. My patients were my family. I often attended their funerals. After Awhile it got to me. I felt that I needed to be home with my children.

I was responsible for the whole floor. Our unit was a teaching floor for interns. I had to check their orders especially the chemotherapy orders. I assigned patient care and cosigned the LVN orders. I helped with bathing, getting the patient up in the chair.I was responsible for giving out medications. Ever evening I would try to spend quiet time with my patients. I would give them back rubs and let them talk about their fears. I also educated them on their treatment and what to expect. I have taken care of people with trachs and subclavian catheters.

I worked in the ICU's. I took care of clients who had open heart surgery. I also worked on the transplant floor. We had patients who had received their transplants and others who were waiting. I also worked in medical ICU. These clients had numerous problems. Many were on dialysis, and intubated. I did work in neurology ICU. This was hard because we never knew what their mental status was when they woke up.
