When I was 16 years old my grandfather was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer. I had the privilege of sitting with him for his final 2 months of life. With that experience I learned how to be empathetic as well as the value of patience. As his health began to decline I saw how important it was to help him complete daily task that was once easy for him to do on his own. Teaching him how to navigate to the sink to assist with brushing his teeth, or helping him roll over when his body was too stiff for him to move on his own; are just small examples of what he needed help with on a day to day basis. Right then, at such a young age I knew that I wanted a career in helping others. What I enjoyed most was knowing that his final months, he had me there to take care of him. I was able to make his last few moments as easy as possible. Getting my Phlebotomy Certification is a huge achievement that I am proud of. At one point I had a terrible fear of needles, so I enrolled into a program to not only gain helpful skills to help progress my career; but to also overcome a fear that I carried around since I was a small girl.
