My mom was a foster parent for 39 years. I saw how she cared for many children who needed the love and support of a caring parent. I became a foster parent myself. I worked at a group home for unfortunate children. As my mom got older I cared for her until her final days. I worked for an agency that focused on disabled adults. I became lead care provider, then licensed my home to care for 3 disabled consumers. I became a caregiver because I watched my mother give love and care to many individuals. State workers praised my mom and parents were very grateful. I love to make a difference in someones life. Putting a smile on a sad or lonely face, putting joy into a broken heart or just giving someone a chance to have someone they can depend on and trust. My achievement was having a young man in my home for 5 years who was disabled mentally with Cerebal Palsy who had been abused, neglected and deprived of a normal life and was only 90lbs. He would throw a tantrum every chance he got. Over time I watched this young man grow. He gained weight, began using complete sentences. He learned how to eat like a normal person. He began to call me mom. He would tell me all the time "thank you mom, you take good care of me." His outburst became less, his frowns turned into a smiles. He still has a long way to go, but at least now he has had a chance to love and be loved, he knows now how he should be treated and whats expected of him as a person.
