I understand that individuals with disabilities would take care of their basic needs independently if they were physically able so therefore I use patience and empathy with every person I meet who has physical challenges and even those who don't who may have mental illness or cognitive deficits. I grew up caring for my great grand mother and grandmother. I knew they needed my help and I was able to give it. Although they are no longer with me I am still able bodied and if an elder or disabled needs help I am always glad to do it. What I enjoy most about caregiving is that I can use my hands, feet, mind, or eyes to make someone else's life easier and less stressful. I am proud that my experience with caregiving helped me obtain a position with The Dept. of Family and Protective Services/Adult Protective Services to further aid our often times most vulnerable population.
