The second thing I like is the impact of treating the whole person. It is important to not just rely on medical procedure, but to understand the emotional and mental well-being of the patient. I carefully observe and communicate with the patient to make this happen. As an example, there was one patient at an assisted living home who did not get along with any of the nursing staff. Nurses would always be assigned to her, then removed after one day, because she was uncomfortable. After I was assigned to her, it became a permanent assignment. Being a careful listener and treating her with respect and kindness paid off, and I was happy to have not just a working relationship, but a great friendship with her, too. After 15 years of providing extensive care to geriatric patients with a variety of needs, I have developed the skills to effectively handle any situation. Having raised a successful son for 18 years as a single mother, I know the difference true caring and concern can make.
