Caregiving is unlike anything I have ever done, and never thought it was something I could do. My degree is in business, but I always enjoyed the interaction with clients, coworkers, just people in general. Unprepared, and unexpected came the decision to care for a close friend newly diagnosed with cancer given 6 months to live. I could not turn my back to him like his family, leaving him unable to withstand the disease, much less cook, bathe, or drive. His funds were quickly diminishing, and had no health insurance. This is when I discovered my purpose, but it was not easy, and a lot was instinct. Honestly, it was dealing with getting him the right treatment after obtaining insurance that was the most difficult of tasks, and applying for SSI correctly to expedite the process to buy groceries, and necessities. The physical care was gentle, but efficient, and empathized with his situation as much, was possible. Together, we turned 6 months into two years, because he knew he was not alone. Caregiving is more than just the care you provide, it is letting the person know someone, sincerely, cares about them and feels safe in their presence. Family members/loved ones also, need to trust they can go to work, or take a break without worry. Wanting to provide the best care enrolled in the CNA course that follows state requirements for procedure and knowledge. All I want is to do what I love in its benefit to the client, because they are all that matters.
