I am a great caregiver generally speaking, because I enjoy helping people, especially the elderly. I've felt this way since I can remember, and was drawn to the field for that reason. I feel that I'm very compassionate, understanding, easy to talk to, responsible- and flexible with regard to availability. I'm the type who can be called on in a pinch to work if someone is sick. Prior to becoming a caregiver, I helped care for my nephew, Jake, who was born with autism, and later my mother, prior to her death in 2002. I derive much gratification from helping people and interacting with them. Some of the elderly have amazing stories and words of wisdom to share! The last position I held as a caregiver was for a married couple in their 90's. She had had a stroke, leaving one side of her body paralyzed and he was on kidney dialysis 4 times a week, which left him exhausted. Under the circumstances they were both very nice people and having a caregiver was a huge adjustment for both of them. The wife, Lee was particularly hard hit in that she had to give up virtually all her previous interests and activities. They both passed away within a short time of eachother. The position previous to that one was a brother/sister who began living together when his (Bob's) alzheimer's disease became evident.
