I was working as a secretary for Mayo Health System and so working in the hospital setting made me want to become a nurse. I got a job as a Community Living Specialist in a 3-4 bed adult family home and worked there for five (5) years. During that time, I took care of four (4) residents. I had the following duties: range of motion, personal cares, dispensed medications, transferring, used a Hoyer lift, meal preparation, basic housekeeping, shoveled snow, mowed grass, and took residents on outings. Also, during this time, I completed courses for Personal Care Worker, annual education, and CPR and First Aid. I enjoyed this work because I was working in a home and working with the same residents all of the time. We got to know each other and was able to work with them and see their health and independence progress.
