See my profile at https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebeccaspowell My dad had Polio when I was born; I grew up paying attention to what help he needed; caregiving is as natural to me as tying my shoes. Eventually he developed emphysema and post Polio syndrome and the family cared for him at home for four years - he died at home. Caregiving is a unique opportunity to help a person remain fully integrated in family and community which preserves their dignity and respects their unique gifts to us. I love the opportunities that caregiveing gives me to learn from another and explore their expertise as well as growing my own understanding of life. My partner and I owned electronics businesses for many years and had many exciting and interesting adventures. He died two years ago and I have picked myself up and embraced reinventing me. I have come to terms with the computer, refinancing the mortgage, finding schools and direction, leaving a job after 16 years, and sorting out the finances to move into the future. I have a lifetime of achievements and the most important ones are in the personal realm of caregiving and the choices I have made to be able to care for my loved ones. I am the youngest of 6 siblings. My parents were married for 55 years and they raised us on a small subsistance farm near Lake Erie. They made sure we were busy, productive students and adults. We learned from them to step up to the needs of others and take the initiative to help where we are able.
Caregivers that work non-full-time jobs or irregular shifts can negotiate extra compensation in addition to their standard hourly wage.
