I was raised in a home that provided care to elderly and developmentally disabled adults, it was a fantastic upbringing in a environment that most people will never have the joy of understanding. Becoming a care provider when I turned 18 just seemed like the next logical step for me career wise and personally, and it's been a blast everyday I get to get out and help someone out. I love meeting new people and doing my best to make their lives a bit better without taking away their freedom, regardless of their disability. I'm so proud of how much I've been able to help people enjoy themselves again in a healthy outlet. It's been a wonderful experience with each person I've come in contact with. I am the type of person who enjoys learning. The subject matter is usually a secondary, I just really enjoy improving myself.

My name is Mary E Hersel and I sm 57 years of age. I have been close to caregiving work in one form or another all of my adult life. When I was 24 I worked in a memory care and rehab center in Wenatchee, Wa. Then later took care of my mother for 4 years prior to her death. I was the caregiver and my sister was the nurse. She had mobility problems as well as swallowing issues which eventually led to a feeding tube. I later tok care of a brother as he recovered from a surgery that led to a colostomy bag. My husband had a stroke a few years before he passed away and I took care of him thru that. During most of thi=ose years I was working in retail or waitressing, but after my husband passed I felt the need for something different and went into caregiving fulltime. Since that time I have been certified as a HCA in Washington state. I also took the studies to become a CNA but did not as yet take the state test. I have moved here to Las Vegas and am now hoping to continue as a caregiver.

I am proud of the fact that I understand and am an advocate for the elderly/special needs populations.
