Living with people and supporting each other gives life a meaning. This is why I became a care provider. 3 years as a live in care giver has equipped with knowledge of dealing with challenges faced by elderly people and those with needs within our community which require a helping hand. Simple achievements like understanding a person at a certain age or condition can not hold a big glass and drink enough water comfortably or during the pandemic while family members could not visit their loved ones setting up video calls and guiding them how to communicate with new technology brings joy and satisfaction to all. Although it started as a job now it's a way of life being that shoulder to lean on.

I always new I wanted to be a caregiver at a very young age . My grandmother would help all the elderly in the neighborhood and I tagged along to help . From high school I went to Owens college for my certification to become an Aide . I've learned through years of experience to blend in the ways of caring to becoming friends with the patient. Learning their life and what is their routine , what they like or dislike. Keep moving ( move it or lose it ) daily range of motion and exercise is important,.Keep living and enjoy what you can . Over 28 years of caring for people ,I became friends with so many family's that I still have contact with and referrals from their family and friends.

I am so people person and I enjoy to take care of others. I have been assisting with my fathers care for the past nine years. He is a Vietnam veteran who is a double amputee who still suffers from PTSD. Because of taking care of him I want to help other families because I understand how hard it is when a family member falls ill and needs a companion!

My first attempt at being a caregiver was on the job training. My deceased wife had a lot of health problems. Diabetic, COPD, renal failure leading to dialysis. We ended up getting Anita a self-powered wheelchair which gave her a since of independence. I adjusted pretty good in being able to help her. She was a very loving person and it was easy to give her the love back in caring for her. I took an evening job so I could be available to take her to dialysis 3 times a week. While she was receiving her treatments, I would doing grocery shopping, laundry, and run around errands. She had a great attitude towards her health problems so I adjusted well in helping her however I could. I was truly an act of love. So I became a caregiver out of necessity but never resented it. It was like a partnership. I could do all the things that she was not able to do. It worded out pretty well. I have no regrets. I enjoyed the chance to help someone and see on her face her appreciation for what I could do. I have always liked help people and when I was a teacher did this in my classrooms. With Anita this was a chance to help her exclusively. My person achievement in being a caregiver was making her life complete and she was very happy until the day she passed on to the lord. I miss that lady but was thinking that I could recapture the feeling of help a person or family once again. I was the greatest feeling that I ever felt...
