i became a caregiver because i love to offer my help. I love helping people who need help with the tasks for independent living. I took care of my elderly mother for 6 years and found it to be very rewarding to me spiritually. She was very, very thankful for my kindness and empathy. This is important to me to make a difference for someone who needs help!

Home caregivers can really make or break someone’s healthcare experience, especially when it comes to hospice care. Sure, there are difficult patients, but sometimes it’s good to have a little reminder that a caregiver’s job isn’t just watching over a patient but also giving the patient’s family peace of mind.

I am a very caring and patient young woman . Since I was 10 I started taking care of my younger family members it just came naturally. What I enjoy the most is the connection I have with the people have helped. What I am most proud of the strong relationship that still remains between us.

Hello my name is June I love being a home health aide and taking care of people there is no other job more rewarding than this one. In addition I worked for the office of the disabled in Bergen County for a few years which was equally as rewarding I like to make my patients life easier for them in any way that I possibly can and keep them comfortable and in good spirits. There is nothing I wouldn't do to ensure that my patients are happy and getting the help that they need. I'm a very reliable caring and nurturing person who strives to make a difference in other people's lives. If I didn't have to sleep I would work 24/7 that's how much I love being in this field.

I am great at what I do because it comes from the heart. I find reward in the intimacy, trust and rapport gained from a complete stranger in trusting their well being with me. The place that is sometimes to hard to open up to our loved ones because it exposes a vulnerability is shared and nurtured. I am entrusted with this responsibility and gift. I started providing one on one care in 2006 just for extra cash in the hospital where I did patient registration. My past experience in customer service allowed me to convey my inner smile while defusing and resolving issues. But being a comfort to a terminally ill or a mentally distraught person changed my life. It changed my focus and I became interested in more meaningful things. Since I started doing home care I recognized my ability to connect with diverse groups, generations and cultures. It inspired me to take a course in cultural anthropology and become an interfaith minister. I now volunteer in Hospice giving massage and Reiki and aspire to be a psychiatric nurse practitioner so I can counsel. I recently became a Licensed Practical Nurse.

I have been around elderly and handicapped people all my life, I have life learning experience from helping and anticipating needs of people; I enjoy helping people. I have 3 qualities that my clients have told me that make me a good home health aide: I am a good listener, I am kind and I stay calm. It’s been said that listening is a fading art; 3 ways I achieve at this art: be curious, I love finding out about people, their history when they were a child, how they met their spouse, what their favorite foods are, what activities they like. Second, listen to what a person would like to do, to achieve that day or a goal to work on. I feel that part of my job is to allow my client to reach and live to their potential, so as I get to know them and see what they can do I let them and help them to do what they can't. Third, listen, as well as look/see any signs of physical discomfort or mental/emotional stress. Being kind and staying calm. These qualities play an important part of my job. I have learned in many jobs, both home aide and others that it makes my day go well to be kind and patient and calm; then it makes the clients day go well too! One achievement I am pleased with was when I worked with a dementia patient, as a live-in for a few days a week. I took initiative and as I sat with her during meals I would show her photos of family and encourage her memory and enjoyment in remembering and telling stories. I would also set the table with memorabilia which would bring recollection. This served as a plus for her family as when they came to visit she would interact with them.
