Currently an LVN. License #708512 I have been a caregiver since I was 18 and have about 8 years of experience in hospice, hospital based, and behavioral health care. I believe that as a caregiver and nurse you need to have the integrity and heart to do the job. I enjoy seeing the smiles in my patients faces when I am able to help them holistically or their activities of daily living. I also specialize in de-escalation when someone is going through a crisis. I've worked in an inpatient, crisis stabilization and youth crisis stabilization. I help develop a care plan and make sure my patients are free from pain and comfortable during their stay and that gives me the greatest satisfaction that I can help a somebody make their life a little better.

Devoting most of my time to the care of someone else is one of the most selfless things someone can do, but it's not only about the time involved. Being able to understand the person you're caring for, knowing their problems, challenges and desires will not only make it easier to care for them, but will undoubtedly improve the relationship you have with each other. Empathy is a big aspect of that, and being able to put yourself in someone else's shoes and be empathetic will only increase the quality of care you're providing. As instrumental as caregivers are, communication is key. It can be something as simple as going through the day's schedule, or complicated as discussing health concerns, but no matter what it is, it must be done well. Subpar communication will do nothing beneficial for the relationship, and in fact, could damage it. Furthermore, as it's likely there's more than one caregiver in the individual's life, and because of all the moving parts, communication is key to get information to all the relevant parties. Whether it's relaying health information or just remaining congenial, communication between caregivers is important, second only to communicating with the individual.

Hi, my name is Colleen. I am four months away from becoming a registered nurse, I currently hold a certified nursing assistant license, along with a certification in CPR/BLS. Many aspects of nursing have always been a part of my life as far back as I can remember. My second to eldest brother was born with Congenital Glaucoma; completely blind in the right eye and partially blind in the left eye. As a family, we face a number of obstacles to meet his needs. Monthly travels to San Francisco, California for eye specialists, surgeries and just thirty-minute check-ups. My family's life revolved around hospital visits and San Francisco's Ronald McDonald Home. Close to his age and resembled enough to be mistaken as his twin, I remained my brother's right hand soon as I could walk. I stayed by his side whenever he needed assistance and of course, his buddy. As young adults, I became his caregiver, a paid part-time job under the State of California through In-Home Supportive Services which taught me how to care for him in a more professional caregiver to client manner. Nonetheless, my passion for nursing didn't evolve with just caring for my older sibling or even stumbling upon situations where I stood the only calm individual in emergency situations. My curiosity began when I came across websites such as Samaritan Purse and Doctors without Borders. In October of 2017 and 2018, I embarked on medical mission overseas. I traveled to Haiti with other medical professionals from around the US, serving 100-150 children a day for basic medical needs. My passion comes in serving others and hope one day, I can help serve you.

Skills & Certifications: Post Surgery Recovery, Stroke, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Skin Disorders, Respiratory Disorders, Vision and Eye Disorders, Tracheotomy / Ventilation, Renal and Urological Disorders, Parkinson's Disease, Palliative Care, Hospice Care, Multiple Sclerosis, Neurological Disorders, Orthopedic Care, HIV/AIDS, Hearing Disorders, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Cardiovascular Disorders, COPD, Dementia, Depression, Diabetes, Arthritis, Alzheimer's Disease
