I'm passionate about taking care of the elderly or individuals with mental and physical disabilities. I have recently had to take care of my own elderly father who passed in sept from CHF. The older population really touch my heart. I love learning about who they are as individuals so many times they get labeled as elderly and the caregivers I have seen just ignore the fact that they are humans too! I have been a CNA for 15 years. At the age of 20 I started going to the nursing home where my grandmother resided and took care of her. She had Alzheimer's. She could not do anything for herself. I would go and feed her and help the other CNA's take care of her. I had a RN and Administrative staff from the nursing home talk to me about going to school to become a Nurse. I enrolled in their CNA program and completed all courses and passed State Boards in Paducah, KY. My grandmother died a year after I received my certification. I worked there for 8 years. I took some time off until my two children were in preschool. I then decided to go back to being a CNA, but this time I wanted to give the hospital a try. I applied to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN. I got the job. A job most people dream about getting. I loved every second of it. It was remarkable, but very different from nursing homes. I was a CNA, but did LPN work with my patients. I feel like I've been around the world working at Vanderbilt. You come across so many different walks of life and each patient is different and that in itself is so rewarding. I decided to not go to nursing school because I love being able to bond with my patients. I didn't just want to do paperwork and give meds. I love being a CNA. I love every relationship I've built with my patients and their families.
