When you and your parents reach that point in life when roles reverse and they suddenly need care, assistance and advocacy, you want do everything you can for them. I found myself in that position years ago when my father was suffering from diabetes, cardiac disease and dementia. It was a challenge to split my time between Dad and my own family, but I wanted to provide him with loving, efficient care and I didn't feel that could be provided by anyone other than a family member. Fortunately, I was capable of taking on that responsibility. I know that not everyone has that possibility. I am a mature, educated, healthy, active and responsible adult. I have raised children, faced health challenges with family members, and provided support and care for aging parents. I am compassionate, patient, creative, enthusiastic, and a great communicator. Besides providing care for my father in the past, I am currently assisting my 85-year-old mother and her 90-year-old husband in various areas. I drive them to all medical appointments, take meticulous notes and ask questions as I found it is essential for seniors to have an advocate with them in these situations. Other tasks that I help with include: set up medications, provide personal care and hygiene, dressing, housework, handle scheduling issues, help with physical therapy, grocery shopping, food preparation and cooking. I am a huge proponent of healthy eating with focus on whole foods, primarily plants, and the elimination of processed junk foods and fast foods. I also emphasize mental stimulation. My step-dad enjoys puzzles and my mother is an avid coloring book enthusiast! Social interaction and physical movement are other aspects that I encourage. I love being able to provide assistance and companionship in a respectful and caring manner. Our precious senior family members deserve that.

I've worked in theatre/performing for about 8 years in Los Angeles. I left show biz and went into marketing. My career was in event marketing. But after many burn out years working in the corporate world I am looking for work that is meaningful and productive, but without the capitalistic stress. I became interested in care giving after taking care of my mom for about 7 years when she came down with congestive heart failure. She lived in my home and I saw the challenges she faced as she grew weaker (just organically) and the many challenges she faced with the health care industry. I wished I could have done more... Eventually she was living in SF Bay Area while I was in Portland, flying down every few weeks to care for her. I know there's a real need for senior assistance. I think it's important to be available to someone. The main thing is to embrace the needs of a senior person, to welcome their need for assistance, and to truly show compassion, empathy, but most importantly respect . What gives me satisfaction is something really selfish actually - and it the feeling like I did my best to make my mentee to feel good and just like normal person. I love being able to care for another person but not show that I'm trying. It's my goal to make others feel welcomed, respected, and as simple (or sophisticated) as anyone else. I'm proud of my volunteer work I did for SOLVE, picking up trash in different Portland neighborhoods and Stumptown Stage Company, where I have participated in painting of every set for the last two years.
