I was told by family that I was very good and a natural and should become a nurse, but I'd much rather do more of the same as I did with my mom and grandmother.

What attracted me to becoming a caregiver is when I took care of my mother after she had a total knee replacement . I began my career in dentistry. I graduated from Indiana University with a certificate in Dental Assisting and earned my Expanded Functions of Dental Assisting in 1996 and went on to be a sophomore in dental hygiene and pre dental. While attending dental hygiene I became married and had my son Gabriel. During this time I took time away from school to stay home with my baby! When he was two I went to work as a Dental Assistant again. During this time I noticed Drs treating patients as numbers instead of people. So my nurse friend asked if I would like to work as a home health aide/ caregiver for home health Visiting Angels. I started working with Visiting Angels in 2013. And I found my purpose!! I worked with hospice, Alzheimer's, dementia, Parkinson's, stroke, and being a companion. I have a lot of experience with medication reminders, bathing hygiene, ect. The thing I enjoy most about caregiving/ home health aide is putting smiles on my patients faces, helping them as much as I can so they know they are cared about. I treat each patient as I would want my family taken care of!! I'm very compassionate and patient. I give over 100% And I absolutely love what I do. Prior to getting my bachelors in nursing, I was an activities assistant in a nursing home where I ran daily exercises and events to keep residents minds and bodies active. With me currently working on a progressive care unit I have experience with NG tubes, peg tubes, catheters, IVs, implanted Ports, pacemakers, and trachs. My son is almost 10, he has a rare genetic deletion which allowed all these mental/physical health problems. he was diagnosed at 9 months old with bilateral retinoblastoma and underwent 8 rounds of chemo and radiaton and had to have a central line that I had to be trained on how to flush daily and change his site dressing . He also has low functioning autism , he's still in diapers at 10, non verbal, blind in his right eye from the cancer. My daughter is almost 8 and was born with a genetic problem as well. She's has teribleood swings, ADHD, seizures and other mental problems. Sorry if I have over explained I just feel that some of you would like to know that I walk in the same steps as many of you do on a daily basis.
