I'm Summer ONeal, I have 10 years experience as a caregiver (mainly memory care). My very first job was in an assisted living facility. I have done CNA training and Medical Assistant training.

I am a retired Recreation Therapist with my Master degree and 37 years of paid experience working with seniors. I have much training working with Alzheimer’s dementia. I live locally, am very kind and patient, am reliable, honest, dependable and am hard working. I can provide many activities to increase their quality of life; I also have 4 years of experience working in their home, as I am also a Certified Home Health Aide; I assist them with ADL skills, assisting them getting out of bed, getting washed, getting dressed, toiletting, eating, doing light house work, cooking, driving to appts and dispense medications. I have 16 years of professional caregiving experience and many years of unpaid personal family experience. I chose to stay in Caregiving over the years because I wanted to remain socially involved on a personal basis with people. My work at home involves things I mostly do alone, like studying nature, writing, and improving my art. It helps to have a balance in life.

I have been a C.N.A. since 1981 when I was 19 years old. I have always had a "soft spot" for the elderly/sick. I have worked in all areas of healthcare over the years, hospitals, home health, nursing facilities, geri/psych unit, hospice, private duty. I now own my own business, Quality Home Care, a non-medical home care. This is my calling and I am honored to help others in need.

I became a care giver, because my passion is to help others, who are unable to do for themselves, and to give them the quality of life that they deserve. I like the personal reward that I receive from my clients, when they are taken care of completely. My personal achievement, nursing a client that I cared for, for almost 2 years, and she was very ill, and with my personal touch, and quality time that I spent with her, she competely got better, learned how to walk, talk and enjoy life again, and a simple thank you from her meant the world to me. I am extremely compassionate and completely trustworthy, I'm very professional, and have the gift of love for all of my clients, because their ultimate care I take very personal and I display my caring attribute daily.

I have held many positions in the health field. My reasons for remaining in health care are many but the most prominent is the self gratification of helping others.

My current job does not say much about who I am as a person or a caregiver. Before starting in factory work I worked in a nursing home for 4 years. After the nursing home I worked in assisted living for a year. I gave my heart to those jobs. I loved ever minute of being with the elderly. I started by waking them up and taking them to the toilet. Then I would help them get dressed or dress the ones who were unable. I would then assist with normal morning hygiene care. I would take them to dine with others in the dinning hall and then I would feed the ones who could not go. I would do daily excersizes with the residents and give baths when it came time. After breakfast some would take naps, watch tv or do other things. After my rounds of helping to use the bathroom I would visit with some that I didn't get to spend so much time with because of our morning rush to eat. So many of those people whom I took care of couldn't remember some of their own family, but they knew when they seen me coming everyday and they were so happy at times. At the end of the day helping others comes naturally. My gratitude I get from being a caregiver is just making someone smile. If I can make them smile then I must be doing something well.

When I was young my grandfather was very sick. He had several Strokes over the years. My grandmother had no choice but to work to take care of him. So my family and I had to pull together and take care of him. We had to do things such as changing his adult diapers, bathing him feeding him, transferring him. But most of all showing him the love and compassion that he needed. He was a very proud man. He always took care of everyone else. He didn't like having other people to take care of him. So we did everything humanly possible to make him more comfortable. That's what got me into this line of work. And that's what I think of every time I go to a client's house. I think, if this was papaw... what would I do? This is the only job I've ever really loved. And I suppose I have him to thank for it.
