What attracted me to caregiver is I was raised by older people and the older they got I saw how hard it was for them just to do a simple task, I would always offer my help and to see their smiles when you have helped makes my day. I just enjoy helping other when and how ever I can, my achievement I'm proud of is I started school again which I thought I would never get the chance to do again and I'm super excited.

I was raised primarily by my grandparents. I helped care for my great-grandmother and grandmother at the end of their life with dementia. My great-grandmother was placed in a nursing home and at age 11 I became the nursing home recreation assistant. It was a life changing experience and was relieved when we were able to care for my grandmother at home. I raised three boys and worked in special education and private education for 17 years. After my divorce I went back to caregiving. I am currently completing my yoga teacher training and certification with particular emphasis on helping aging adults (I guess I'll include myself in that category :)) to avoid the nursing home/sickness/dis-ease cycle (that's my term) by not only caregiving but keeping us active and engaged mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually. I have studied home safety/fall safety in buildings (most are not built with mobility issues in mind) and assist families in making small adjustments to help in keeping their loved ones safe in their own home. What I am most proud of is that I enjoy working with seniors and provide respectful care and consider myself a professional. I choose to work independently because I have not found a care agency that fosters professionalism or respect for their employees and many caregivers do not see themselves as professionals. When I am not caregiving I live with my cat, Murphy, care for plants, read, do embroidery and other fiber crafts, and upcycle items for resale (I'm a big thrifter). I enjoy puzzles, games, books, yoga, walking, and cooking.

For over 20-years, I've been employed by AT&T (formerly Southwestern Bell Telephone Co). I have three adult children and eight grandchildren. I'm a former elected official (Lamar CISD Board of Trustee, 2009-2013). I became a caregiver when my granddaughter, at the age of 4, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014. I drove her to all of her treatments, surgeries, and stayed overnight (as needed) at the hospital in Houston, TX. My granddaughter beat childhood cancer. She is now thriving in school. Then my late father was diagnosed with Dementia in 2017. He could no longer drive. Therefore, I began driving him and my mother to their doctor appointments, as needed. Including either driving my mother to the grocery store or department store so that she can shop. My mother's eyesight is very sensitive to the light and she's losing her eyesight. Therefore, now my mother just gives me her grocery list and I do her grocery shopping. My late father passed away in late 2019. Now I'm my mother's full-time caregiver. Recently, my eldest brother was diagnosed with leukemia. I drive him to his treatments, as needed.

I enjoy the company of elders, I find them to be full of wisdom and lived experiences. Spending time with them from a caregiving perspective does not feel like a job, on the contrary. Doing this allows me to give back to my community and help families in need when they need it most.
