I became a caregiver because of my parents in need of care...During a 36+year period I have worked as a caregiver/home-care aide also assisted caring for my parents until they departed. I was taught to honor thy mother/ father and respect others at a young age... I have completed and passed a C.N.A. course 19+years ago and have worked in nursing homes,skilled facilities and rehab centers as a rehab assistant for quite sometime now...What I do in making a difference in helping others has always been a joyous experience. My 13 years experience in caring and assisting people who can't do for themselves. After 5 years of going to Physical and Occupational therapies 3 times a week with him, learning the exercises, then assisting him with these exercises in his home.he is no longer wheel chair bound, he walks 2 miles a day , he drive his vehicle, he's continues exercising in a gym, and he's no longer depress about his ability but encourage others living with a disability.

Hello, My name is Angelic Washington . I became a caregiver 10 years ago when my grandma was 84 years old and diagonoised with dementia . It was very hard for my grandpa to care for her alone. My mom and I took care of her until she passed away at 94 years old. During that time I also took care of another dementia patient for 5 years . Elizabeth was a part of my extended family .Her family treated me as their own . Her daughter was able to leave the home for 8 hours a day to work and know her mom was in the best care . I stayed with her until she passed away .

It's not so much of a "what" makes me a great caregiver it's the "who". I was the sole care take for both my grandfather and father for 2+ years before going to school for my CNA. I know what it means to treat patients like family because I know what it's like to have the one I love sitting on the other end. I pride myself in being very patient, understanding and empathetic. I've always loved helping others, maybe it's because most of my family is in the medical field. I love helping people. I have been a caregiver for over 10yrs part time and full time. My biggest challenge was my parents. My father had Alzheimer's and my mom suffered a stroke. I remember how much relief it was to have someone even for a couple of hours to relieve me. I no longer have my parents but I can continue to help someone's else just like I was help.
