I became a Caregiver because of my Father, I took care of my father 24/7, because of cancer, I volunteer to hospital's and rehabilitation center to know all there was to be a CNA caregiver. I gave my father the ability to feel like he was still the man he once was, even though he could not do the things he use to do. I am the proud daughter of a WWII Navy Veteran who was an amazing father, husband, uncle, and friend to many. He taught me to have respect for my elders and to give back in any way possible to a generation who gave so much of themselves for us all. I spent several years helping to care for my mother who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. I later became a daily companion for 2 years to my mother-in-law, who suffered from cancer and dementia. I was present when both passed away. For the past 12 years, I have provided companionship and care to many elderly folks, right in their (or a loved one's) home. Getting to know my new friends is a priority, and engaging in meaningful conversation which stimulates the mind is an essential part of what I do. I am careful to acknowledge a person's capabilities and strengths as well as their weaknesses. As needed, I will assist with: reading, writing, eating, ADL's (activities of daily living) including walking, mobility devices, medication reminders, personal grooming and dressing. I can also do light house work, prepare meals, drive to appointments, and run errands. I am able to assist and guide, but not lift or transfer. I am trustworthy and very loyal. After 10 years at IBM I went on to work with developmental and intellectually disabled adults for a few years and from there I went on to Home Health Care where I was also assigned hospice cases.
